Introducing KIPAF

PERFORMERS iNDEPENDENT (Pi) was an independent artists' collective, experimenting and exploring the traditional, modernist and contemporary spaces in the cultural paradigm. The Kolkata International Performance Art Festival was initiated by Pi in 2012 to annually open up the city of Kolkata to diverse traditions of performance, performitivty and interventions. Since then Pi has got fragmented but KIPAF has taken deeper roots.

The festival aims to be a platform for dialogue between site, art, politics and culture. KIPAF acknowledges the nascent nature of Performance Art in India, and will always play a role in the pedagogy of performance art.
The festival is be held between 23rd-26th January every year.

Performance by Puja Mehta - #kipaf15 Day 3

Santhosh Sakhinala's report

There was an element of shock and pain in Puja’s performance activity. She approached people who were smoking at the Academy of Fine Arts, where we have met and Abraka-dabra were performing, and asked for their lit cigarettes. When some of them curiously and casually extended their cigarettes, she stubbed them on the back of her palm. This act of inflicting pain on her body, involving the help of smokers irked few and inspired few others. Some of the onlookers have lighted their cigarettes so as to attract Puja towards them and extended their cigarettes for their easy pleasure. As Puja noted that they were men who indulged in such moments of pain to be flourished on her body stubbing cigarettes at the back of her palm.
