Introducing KIPAF

PERFORMERS iNDEPENDENT (Pi) was an independent artists' collective, experimenting and exploring the traditional, modernist and contemporary spaces in the cultural paradigm. The Kolkata International Performance Art Festival was initiated by Pi in 2012 to annually open up the city of Kolkata to diverse traditions of performance, performitivty and interventions. Since then Pi has got fragmented but KIPAF has taken deeper roots.

The festival aims to be a platform for dialogue between site, art, politics and culture. KIPAF acknowledges the nascent nature of Performance Art in India, and will always play a role in the pedagogy of performance art.
The festival is be held between 23rd-26th January every year.

Greetings

We, the members of Performers Independent extend our invitation to artists and performers from all corners of the world to participate in the first Pi Kolkata International Performance Art Festival to be held in January 2013. Those who have visited Kolkata will know that it is the best time of the year here—there is a nip in the air, and the tropical sun takes the backseat. Artists under the initiative of Pi have been hosting these performances in this city for several years in order to explore new avenues of expression. This year we thought, why not spread the word around, and get creative minds to gather in Kolkata and share as well as enrich these experiences. Hence, we are throwing open, under the initiative of Pai, Bcp…an invitation to artists and performers and generally enthusiasts within and across borders to allow us to befriend them, and explore, along with them, the limits of statehood, as well as search for avenues of sociality through movements across the city-scape of Kolkata.
