Introducing KIPAF

PERFORMERS iNDEPENDENT (Pi) was an independent artists' collective, experimenting and exploring the traditional, modernist and contemporary spaces in the cultural paradigm. The Kolkata International Performance Art Festival was initiated by Pi in 2012 to annually open up the city of Kolkata to diverse traditions of performance, performitivty and interventions. Since then Pi has got fragmented but KIPAF has taken deeper roots.

The festival aims to be a platform for dialogue between site, art, politics and culture. KIPAF acknowledges the nascent nature of Performance Art in India, and will always play a role in the pedagogy of performance art.
The festival is be held between 23rd-26th January every year.

IN MEMORY OF THE DEAD WITHIN

#inmemoryofthedeadwithin

The Bhawanipore Cemetery is a civil cemetery has been in use since 1864, many of the earlier burials of service personnel and their dependants being made from the nearby garrison at Fort William, from which the cemetery initially took its name. Originally, the graves were in denominational plots throughout the cemetery, war graves and civilian graves indiscriminately mingled. In 1954, the church authorities decided that it would be necessary to clear certain plots and the outlying war graves were moved by the Commission into the area with the largest number of war burials. This now forms a separate service section containing the graves of both world wars. During the Second World War, various establishments important to the war effort were posted to Calcutta and No 47 General Hospital was there from January 1943 to the beginning of February 1945.

As KIPAF 17 approaches , we begin an exercise of visiting sites of engaging with our sites  - Bhawanipore  Cemetery invoked ideas of a rusted colonial legacy, a buried anglo Indian history , of christianity overlaid with bengali or chinese  cultural layers - also of damn cold soil, a fading winter sun - and kolkata afternoons.

Rahul Bhattacharya initiated a piece using
#mygrandfatherwasnotanartist, #inmemoryofthedeadwithinin loving memory of winters spent two years ago #sajanmani as points of entry. With ideas to bring in dialogues around Body, Silence, Capitalism, Globalisation .Anirban Datta -
Sudhasatwa Ghosh Mome Bhattacharya responded, beginning a performance jam

' কতটা সময়ের গভীরতা..?দেহ মিশে যায় অবহেলায়।প্রান্তে পৌছে ক্ষয়ে যাবে সব;থেকে যায় শব। আর নীরবতা '
Recollection is like a giant river reaching towards a sea...its take more than what we have for ourselves; What we took for ourselves...
Our body also have that same journey.Neither we ken the exact birthplace nor the cessation rope.On 7th January afternoon Rahul Bhattacharya, Anirban Dutta , Sanyukta ..... , Mom ..... , take an initiative to recall those memory which was there and will be there.Starting with a bluesy dream and coldness of a dead emotion is comes to a terminus with a call of silence. And yes; that silence take them throw a durational path with candles, with colours, with love, with anger towards solidarity to mankind. Notes from an onlooker
